International Energy Conference Explores Sustainable Solutions for Pakistan Featured

A two-day International Conference on Sustainable Energy in Pakistan was launched at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Islamabad. The conference was jointly organized by the University of Engineering and Technology Peshawar (UET) and NUST.  Participants included the Federal Minister for Power Division Mr. Omar Ayub Khan; the Mission Director USAID Mr. Jerry Bisson; officials from Higher Education Commission (HEC); renowned national and international energy sector experts; and energy engineering students.

The conference promoted research and development in the energy sector by bringing together both international and national researchers, industrial experts, senior policy makers and civil society members to a common forum. The energy professionals reviewed the latest developments, opportunities and challenges in renewable and non-renewable energy technologies and discussed the future trends. The conference also highlighted the key barriers, challenges and possible solutions for the promotion of market-based adoption of renewable energy technologies in Pakistan.

While addressing the occasion, the Federal Minister for Power Division Mr. Omar Ayub Khan, spoke to the audience, “I see this conference as a valuable addition to Pakistan’s now flourishing energy sector and Specialized Research Centers like USPCAS-E surely will play an instrumental part in providing sustainable and renewable energy solutions”. Addressing the participants, Vice Chancellor UET Peshawar and DG Projects NUST encouraged public and private sector to strengthen academia-industry linkages for addressing Pakistan’s energy challenges through applied research collaboration.

USAID Mission Director Jerry Bisson said, “But meeting the complex and growing energy demands of the future will ultimately depend more on the power of human ingenuity and the capacity to innovate beyond the traditional systems on which we currently rely.  One of the most important investments we can make moving forward is in the institutions that foster innovation and the great minds that convene within them”.

The USPCAS-E program is a partnership between UET Peshawar, NUST and Arizona State University focusing on applied research projects relevant to Pakistan’s energy needs, curriculum development, establishment of state-of-the-art research laboratories and exchange program. This initiative is part of a larger USAID ($127 million) investment in Pakistan designed to harness applied research to find innovative and practical solution for Pakistan’s energy, water, agriculture, and food security challenges.
